Looking for a permanent, loving home...

The cats on this page are all being cared for in our foster homes around the Greater Portland area while they wait to be adopted. Many of these cats are recent mothers whose litters have all grown and been adopted and now they are looking for their forever homes; some weren't happy in the shelter environment and preferred a quieter place to spend their days; and others just needed attention and TLC. Cats in foster care are generally faster to adapt to their adopted home because they have been living in a home environment.  All of these cats are healthy and awaiting your visit, so contact the shelter (207-829-4116; email: info@hartofme.com) to make an appointment!

Perfect for a busy bustling home where he would offer a peaceful presence. Hank is a handsome 3 year old male who has tested positive for Feline Leukemia. Melody - Young Adult female
Melody is a very pretty and very sweet female kitty who was found as a stray and brought to the shelter. She is about 1 1/2 years old, and when she first came was thought to be pregnant. She went into foster care, and it was soon realized that she was not. However, her foster family thinks she is such a nice girl they are finding it hard to bring her back to the shelter. Melody loves kisses and pets, and does her own little head butt to get you to pet her some more. She loves to snuggle at night next to you. Melody is also a very playful girl. She loves a string toy, and also catnip mice which she carries around in her mouth! Melody is not bothered by dogs, but so far is not terribly fond of other cats. He and his siblings have all had some eye issues, and needed some antibiotics to help clear those up. As a matter of fact, two of them have actually lost vision in one eye each. Bravo is still getting used to people handling him. He is very very playful, and is definitely learning to trust his foster family more and more each day. Please call to meet this sweet little guy who needs a bit of your TLC to blossom.

Beckett- Young male                                        Beckett and his brother, Drew, are 2 8 week old kittens ready to go to their forever homes. Beckett is a handsome gray tiger with lots of energy and a great big purr. He is sweet and cute as can be and full of mischief. He lives with older cats and two dogs currently in foster care. They have never really been handled and loved in their life..and are just now realizing that this is a good thing. Bamboo is slightly bigger than his brother and has relaxed and is purring now nearly every time you pick him up. Bonsai is shyer and needs more coaxing to come out and be with you. in just a few days they have made big progress. They are playful and gentle, not at all aggressive. We would love for them to stay together to help each otherr along. Anyone who can see that a little TLC will go a long way for these two will reap a hug reward in the end. Bonsai and Bamboo are waiting for just the right person to come along and help them to blossom!

Pretzel and Guinness- Baby males             Pretzel and Guinness are both super friendly, very sweet kitties who love both people and each other. Guinness is a sleek, shiny black with two small white spots, one on his neck and one on his belly. Pretzel is a beautiful patched tabby. They have extremely loud purrs and love to brawl with each other and play with all sorts of toys. They are very high energy, but when they finally settle down, they both love to snuggle in the nearest lap. Pretzel often leans with her front paws up on your arm or chest. Guinness's meow sometimes sounds like a bark, and Pretzel has a very insistent mew when she wants people or food. Guinness will sometimes hides when he hears a loud or sudden noise, but comes back out right away to investigate the source. They have great personalities and are full of love. While they are both comfortable with small children, they must be carefully supervised so they don't get accidentally stepped on as they (Pretzel especially) can't get out of the way as quickly as most cats, and when picked up they must not be dropped since their legs don't have normal shock absorbing ability. Please call to meet this super pair of special kittens!

Wicca- Baby female                                   Wicca is one of the group of magical kittens who are ready or just about for their forever homes. Please call to meet this lively group of almost eight week old and claim one for yourself!

Houdina- Baby female                                       If you want to know about little Miss Houdina get ready because she's hysterical. She's a diva, and we mean that in the best, and funniest, way. She marches to the beat of her own drum. Not typical cat independence (although she's got a streak of that, too), just somewhat unaware of what's going on outside of her world.Houdina sleeps through the other cats in her foster home playing loudly then when she wakes up she'll walk through the home crying until someone gives her attention. She is playful on her own (with bat toys and bags) and enjoys playing with her foster parents with wand toys. When she's ready, she loves to nap in a lap, and when she wants attention she demands it (and gets it). She's got a wicked great motor, too. And as you can see she is just as cute as a bug. Please come meet this nice little 9 week old girl.

Jude and Cloud- Young males                     Jude and Cloud are two handsome glossy and sleek black male kittens who are about 14 weeks old. They are brothers and would love to find their new home together, but it is not a requirement. Cloud is the one with just a small spot of white fur on his chest. he is a bit more outgoing than his brother...but both boys are little purr machines and love bugs according to their foster mom. She has other older kitties whom they get along well, with. These boys love to play and are very gentle and sweet boys. Please call the shelter to arrange a visit with Jude and Cloud!

Adopt a Senior!
If you're looking to adopt a cat, why not consider adopting an older cat? Senior cats have several positive qualities that a younger kitten might have yet to develop. According to the Humane Society, qualities that make senior animals excellent companions include:

• Older animals already know the ropes. Many are patient and wise, making it easier to assimilate them into a new home.
• Mature animals often give you some time to yourself, as their physical demands are not as high.
• Older animals can learn quickly.  Their ability to focus can be leaps and bounds ahead of impetuous kittens.

So, take a look at some of our "veterans" and see if there's one meant for you.
